Frequently Asked Questions For Traveling Therapists

Travel Therapy, Tailored for PTs and OTs

Everything You need to Know before you travel

Your career matters, and understanding how travel therapy works is the first step. In our Travel Therapy FAQs for Therapists, we break down how assignments are chosen, what benefits you can expect, how we handle paperwork and pay, and what it’s like to work with our team. Consider this your quick guide to getting started.

Licensing and Compliance Questions

Your recruiter will help you understand each state’s requirements, expected timelines, and required documents. We also support PT Compact and OT Compact applications when eligible.

The PT Compact and OT Compact allow licensed therapists in participating states to practice in other member states without obtaining full additional licenses. This makes it faster and easier for PTs and OTs to start new travel assignments. If you’re eligible, your recruiter will help you understand the process and secure compact privileges so you can begin working sooner.

Yes. Many state license fees qualify for reimbursement once you begin your assignment.

Yes. CEU reimbursement may be available depending on the assignment and facility.

A tax home is your primary residence for tax purposes. Maintaining one may allow you to receive tax-free stipends. We can explain general guidelines and recommend tax resources if needed.

Pay, Hours & Contract Details

Overtime and holiday pay vary by facility and state labor laws. Your recruiter will review pay structures with you before you accept a contract.

While many therapists and allied professionals pursue travel roles for the adventure and variety, you can also earn a competitive income. Pay rates vary by facility, specialty, and location but are generally comparable to permanent staff roles.

A typical compensation package may include:

  • Hourly pay rate
  • Medical, dental, and prescription coverage (including dependents)
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Free professional liability coverage
  • Reimbursements for housing, travel, and licensing costs
  • Continuing education credits (CEUs)
  • Assignment-specific bonuses and shift differentials

Guaranteed hours mean you will be paid for a minimum number of hours each week, even if the facility experiences low census, unless otherwise stated in your contract.

Most PT, PTA, and OT assignments require 36–40 hours per week, depending on the setting.

If a contract is canceled, your recruiter will immediately help you secure a new assignment and support you through the transition.
